Architecture students build schools in Africa!

Dear Alumni, Faculty, Staff, Students and Friends,

The Bernard and Anne Spitzer School of Architecture is very proud to announce the "Design for Maasai" design build campaign.  In partnership with the Africa Foundation, Professor Robin Osler and her team of students in the Advanced Option Studio will work over the spring semester on an expansion and master plan of the existing primary school located in the Masai Mara in Kenya.  The community of the Spitzer School of Architecture is compelled to help in ways both great and small for empowerment, education and school expansion for the Maasai people.   Our students are uniquely poised for this challenge: their diversity, economic background and civic mindedness make them very sensitive to improving the lives of those most in need in Africa.

We hope to raise enough money to send all 12 of the students and two faculty members over the summer to help start building an expanded Iltolish Mara Primary School. The amount of money we raise will determine the number of students that can go to Africa and see their design build project in action.

This is a wonderful opportunity for both the people of the Maasai but also for our students.  It will be a life changing experience for our students.  Moreover, it propels them to move from theory to practice in a very dynamic way.

How it works:

Professor Osler and her students will work in collaboration with the Africa Foundation officials and engineers to approve the design via Skype, email and telephone.  Over the next three months, the class will spend part of the studio time researching the culture, economics and ecosystem of the people and the site. They will review many different local building materials and the limitations that affect the building process like access to electricity and water.

Then, they will break out into groups to create designs based on their research.  One design will be chosen by a final review committee and the Africa Foundation by May 20th.

The students will then visit Masai Mara, Kenya for 2 weeks in June to help start the building project.  Your contributions to this campaign will ensure that students get the experience of a lifetime by building out their design!

Please join our effort and give what you can to support our efforts to make the world a better place with buildings designed by the Spitzer School of Architecture students at the City College of New York.  Your gift will make a difference in the lives of students in New York City and in the lives of students in Kenya.  Your gift today of any amount will have a double impact.
